I want to make a video player for my website, but I want it to be perfect quality (as in it sounds/looks the exact same online as it does on my computer). I hear you usually use flash to make such a player, but would that mean I have to convert all videos to stupid .flv format? Or can a flash video player play high quality stuff as well? I just want to upload stuff without changing the quality AT ALL.
Thanks.

.FLV is a container format that supports several codecs (such as H.263/4 which are also common in “high quality” Quicktime files). Newer versions of Flash have wizards that make it very easy to embed a fancy player into a web page, which is probably why it is so common. Other options would be to embed a Quicktime or WMV file in the page similar to embedding an .SWF file. (lookup “html embed”)
The quality depends on how you compress the file and the level of compression you specify, not the transport mechanism. Just keep in mind if you have a shared host that they may limit transfer rates to 1-2 Mbit/second which means you cannot stream the highest quality video. And if you have more than a couple of visitors at once it is even worse. There are reasons why web video is poor quality.

FLV is not a stupid format. FLV enables your videos viewable on most operationg systems and web browsers via the widely used Adobe Flash Player and browser plug-in.
To display FLV on web pages, you should make a SWF file, then either link or embed the FLV to the SWF file, and embed the SWF to your website. You can do that on Adobe Flash CS3. However, if you are unclear about these stuff, you can try some easier solution, you can use Moyea web player Lite – http://www.flash-video-mx.com/web-player…
which is a flash video player maker that provides quick and easy solution to add videos to web pages and design a media player on website.
