I actually just bought the S 639, which is weird, I got it somewhere else ( sorry amazon lol ), but I guess it is the older version of this one…just wondering if the sound is different on this newer one, since the ear buds are different….but the S639 has tremendous sound, what a great player. It does not have noise cancelling and somewhere else I read that it is a european model, although i bought it at a big box store on clearance. It has the very nice EX 082 earphones, and with the clear bass and all the equalizer settings, it is a fantastic player. Sync with windows media player, and also drag and drop songs/files with file explorer, very easy. Only thing is mine is not gapless playback, but that is not too much of a deal killer for me. Kind of confused with these model numbers and such, but bottom line is these new sony’s are really really really good sounding. I have a 30 gig ipod for a long time, and this sony just crushes my ipod on the sound quality issue….I got the 16 gig and now I wish it had even more storage, but still you can get a few videos and a lot of music on there with 16 gigs…i am thrilled with this player.

I am a sony guy and have been for 30 years. So my opinion maybe biased.
Nevertheless., forget about the ipod hoax ,overpriced and overrated.
SONY HAS A WINNER.,VERY STYLISH,RIGHT FUNCTIONS,WELL BUILT AND GOOD MEMORY CAPACITY FOR AN UNBEATABLE PRICE.
THE ONLY FLAW ,ARE THOSE UNTOUCHABLE PROPRIETARY INTERNAL BATTERIES THAT DICTATE THE LIFE OF THE DEVICE.,REGULAR BATTERIES WOULD MAKE IT SO MUCH BETTER.

I have several mp3 players, Sansa clip, fuze, Zen…and this Sony is one of my favorites because of the sound quality but I don’t care for the feature which allows you to power up the player by touching any button. I keep the player in a case so it’s not knocking around in my pocket or purse but several times already (I’ve only had it a couple of days) I have accidentally turned the unit on with normal handling while it’s in the case, which, of course, depletes the battery. I have not been able to find a way to change this setting. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I just bought it couple of weeks ago, looks and works great – Far better than ipods and zunes. Also, I took “Napster to Go” subscription for $14.95 a month and dont have worry about purchasing songs.
A good deal and worth having this piece.

I bought the 16gig version, it’s a fantastic little player. I was easily able to sync my entire library to the device via windows media player without a hitch, I just had to be sure as always to make sure the artists names were exact across different albums to keep everything together as it isn’t an exact transfer of the media player structure. My only complaint is that it isn’t as intuitive as the ipod with the digital buttons and volume layout. The FM tuner sucks, but who listens to the radio anyway.
I hate having to be shackled to itunes, so this is a great escape.
