Cellular phones are the ones which operate with the use of radio frequencies. Radio frequency is a form of Electromagnetic energy that will be located right on Electromagnetic Spectrum between the FM radio waves and the waves that are used in radars, microwave ovens and satellite stations. These phones will never emit the ionizing radiations which will damage DNA.

The cell phone technology entirely works on the system of “Geographically Separated Zones” called as ‘Cells’. Each phone has their own ‘Base Station’ where it will emit and receive the radio waves. When a call is made from the cell phone, the signal is sent from the phone’s antenna to the phone’s base station antenna. Here the base station will respond to the cell phone just by assigning it with a radio frequency channel that is available. When RF channel is assigned, then the modulated radio signal will be received and transmitted simultaneously and thus allowing the voice information to carry between the base and the phone. The Base Station will transfer the call to the switching center and thus the call will be transferred to the local telephone carrier or to other phone.

Usage of cellphones is an important RF exposure source for the people who use them. It depends on numerous factors on the amount of RF exposure to which a particular person is exposed. In the geographical areas the number of ‘Cells’ will depend on the cell phone traffic in that area. For large cities it might be several cells per mile whereas for the less populated areas, it might be single cell for several square miles. So small cell are less associated with the exposures.
